Statement by Israel Allies Caucus on Carney Government’s recognition of the State of Palestine

September 22, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Parliament Hill • Prime Minister Mark Carney is wrong to recognize Palestinian statehood under the brutal shadow of Hamas and untrustworthy Palestinian Authority. By doing so the Liberal government grants legitimacy to Hamas — a genocidal terrorist group that raped, murdered and took hostages on October 7, 2023. Hamas still holds hostages today as they continue to rule Gaza with fear, oppression and brutality.

Here at home, anti-Jewish protesters could be emboldened by Mr. Carney’s ineffectual declaration. The consequences of Mr. Carney’s decision are more likely to be felt in the streets of Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and other cities where Canadian values of tolerance and living harmoniously together are under assault. Inspired by the October 7th massacre, extremists in Canada have targeted Jewish communities with hate, violence and lawlessness.

The Prime Minister is merely rewarding violence with a declaration of statehood when Hamas does not recognize Israel’s right to exist. But this is a pyrrhic victory for Palestinians. Indeed, what progress can be expected in the Middle East tomorrow that’s any different from before Mr. Carney’s hollow declaration?

This recognition is appeasement when security and stability are necessary for hostilities to end in the Middle East. Hamas must release every hostage, lay down its weapons and surrender. This would rescue Palestinian families by assuring a cessation to war and the brutal killings that accompany military hostilities.
